Seventh Circuit Affirms Summary Judgment for Union Pacific

On July 25th, the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit affirmed a judgment and injunction in favor of Union Pacific Railroad Company that a local government unit’s attempt to condemn a portion of the UP’s rail property was preempted by the federal Interstate Commerce Commission Termination Act. R3 served as outside counsel to UP in the appeal.
Carla Scarsella Participates in Filming a Recreation of Green vs. River City for the Constitutional Rights Foundation of Chicago

Carla Scarsella recently participated in the filming of Green vs. River City for the Constitutional Rights Foundation of Chicago. The film recreates various aspects of a case that ultimately was argued before the United States Supreme Court. A DVD containing the film will be used to give middle school students participating in the Lawyers in the Classroom (LIC) program the chance to view a case and serve as justices, rendering a decision in their classroom. The DVD and curriculum will be distributed to all LIC 7th and 8th grade teachers and made available to all Chicago Public School middle school teachers free of charge in the fall on 2011.

Carla Scarsella has been appointed Chair and Anne Mitchell Legislative Liaison of the Energy and Telecommunications Law Section of the Chicago Bar Association. Their terms begin in September 2011 and run through June 2012.
John Ratnaswamy has been appointed Vice Chair of the Ethics and Professional Responsibility Committee of the American Bar Association General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Division, effective August 9, 2011.

He discussed the legal foundations underpinning rate cases at the State and Federal level, the standards that regulators use when evaluating proposed changes to rates, and the procedural issues that are a part of a rate case.
